It was as if Dworkin’s feminist career had been pitched right into the backlash. She was a radical feminist who published her first book, Woman Hating, in 1974, four years after the Second Wave’s bright- and quick-burning radical feminist movement had published its major works-Kate Millett’s Sexual Politics, Shulamith Firestone’s The Dialectic of Sex, and Robin Morgan’s Sisterhood is Powerful. Until this moment, Dworkin, who died in 2005, had always been famous primarily for her infamy. This was the sense critics shared in the first slate of reviews of Last Days at Hot Slit, a 2019 anthology edited by Johanna Fateman and Amy Scholder that collects excerpts of Dworkin’s major critical works alongside extracts of novels, lesser-known talks, and previously unpublished essays and letters. ![]() ![]() Andrea Dworkin is having a moment-finally. ![]() Bateson ecology of mind5/13/2023 ![]() He had a natural ability to recognize order and pattern in the universe. Some of his most noted writings are to be found in his books, Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972) and Mind and Nature (1979). Countess Lambert, a close acquaintance of Turgenev, told the author that the Russian emperor himself had read the novella to the empress and been delighted by it. Others condemned the impropriety of that subject matter, namely a father and son in love with the same woman and a young woman who was the mistress of a married man. Some criticized its light subject matter that did not touch upon any of the pressing social and political issues of the day. Here Turgenev is retelling an incident from his own life, his infatuation with a young neighbor in the country, Catherine Shakovskoy (the Zinaida of the novella), an infatuation that lasted until his discovery that Catherine was, in fact, his own father's mistress. Indeed, the author claimed it was the most autobiographical of all his works. Like many of Turgenev's works, this one is highly autobiographical. Background First Love was published in March 1860 in the Reader's Library. It tells the love story between a 21-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy. First Love is a novella by Ivan Turgenev, first published in 1860.It is one of his most popular pieces of short fiction. I had annotated this book by adding a summary at the end of the book. ![]() A tiger mother5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. After checking with many other zoos across the country, The depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. ![]() The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth. In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. The pictures are real, but the accompanying explanation about a mother tiger in California being given piglets to ease her through a depression stemming from the loss of her own cubs is nothing but fiction: As often happens, an item about a tiger's nursing piglets appears to be a case in which someone came across some unusual photographs with no explanatory context and decided to make up his own background story. ![]() |
